In modern culture, stand-up comedy is one of the widely recognized categories of entertainment in western countries and Japan alike. Stand-up is highly popular in both of these cultures and has only increased its popularity and reach with help of internet and social media platforms to share the funny moments and performances. The norm in western countries is solo performances while performing stand-up comedy by comedians; which is significantly different from the usual stand-up comedy style of Japan where stand-up acts are generally performed by a comedy duo. Stand-up comedy duos in Japan usually take different roles in this regard as one comedian plays the fool (boke) and the other one plays the intelligent person (tsukkomi). Therefore, this research study will make attempts to compare the nature of content and comedic style between Japanese culture and western culture by comparing the solo stand-up acts of western countries with the duo-based performances of Japanese performers (manzai).

The differences in solo and duo based stand-up comedy should not present any contradictions with the subject of this study as it will only examine the content of their performances and how comedians use narrative in front of live audience of different cultures, as the comedians need to make intense use of local cultural attributes and language traits. The study has the aim of identifying characteristics of humour as it is perceived in Japan and the way it exists in Japan, and then making a comparison of it with the presence of humour in other countries. Thereby this study shall help in understanding the reasons why humour has penetrated the culture of Japan so deeply and how it has occurred and moreover how the Yoshimoto Creative Agency has positively influenced it.
