Spring passes by and as summer approaches, Elizabeth sets off on another journey with the Gardiners, who are closely related to the Bennett family. As she goes on her trip, she finds herself towards the North and ends up in the neighbourhood of Pemberley that is also the estate of Darcy. However, she visits the place after she is sure about the fact that Darcy will not be around. As she wanders around the estate, she keeps listening statements regarding how nice and generous Darcy is. However, all of a sudden Elizabeth feels stuck at the arrival of Darcy. Mentioning nothing regarding the letter or his proposal, he behaves in a cordial manner with her. He also plans to entertain the Gardiners and Elizabeth is also invited for meeting Darcy’s sister. However, in the duration of these events, Elizabeth receives a letter from home stating that her younger sister had eloped with Wickham and that the couple was found nowhere.
Fearful and scared with disgrace, Elizabeth rushes back home. Mr. Bennett and Mr. Gardiner go out in search of the couple and return empty handed. However, soon the couple was found and also that Wickham was ready to marry Lydia only in return of a yearly income. The family believes that Mr. Gardiner had paid off to Wickham; but soon Elizabeth finds that it had been Darcy to pay off the money and salvation of her family. Soon after Lydia and Wickham get married and Mr. Bingley finally makes an attempt to propose Jane. The family is delighted and enjoy their celebration. By the end of the story, Darcy’s aunt corners Elizabeth and discloses that Darcy will be proposing to Elizabeth. She demands her to refuse the proposal. However, when Darcy proposes Elizabeth she approves and they get married.
Considering a different ending, Elizabeth could have refused the proposal agreeing to the demand of Darcy’s aunt.
Darcy proposing to Elizabeth, “My feelings for you have never ended or changed since the last summer I saw you or the spring I had been mean to you. Will you marry me?”
Elizabeth refuses, “I cannot marry a man who has never been himself or considerably generous to me. I refuse to marry you as I did before.”
