Genre is basically a convention which is coined for the various categories of literature that one sees or reads. The television program one sees or a book that one reads, all fall under different categories of Genre. The classification of these Genres has changed over time. Earlier we used to have just4 basic Genre. Those were Action, Comedy, Drama and Romance (Hilfer, 1990). Now with the changing times the classification of these Genres is also changing. Several new Genres have been named whereby they are combinations of the other Genre. Some new categories of Genre are suspense thriller, crime drama, romantic comedy etc. The audience these days watched television or read the book for entertainment. Entertainment cannot be provided by making a TV series based on only one particular genre. The basic rule of the entertainment or the media industry is to give whatever the customer desires (Mittell, 2001).
The different types of Genre of television serials in use these days are:
Action, Adventure, Crime, Fantasy, Erotic, Horror, Mythological, Mystery, Philosophical and Political etc. Some Genres have also been created by mixing the Genres like Suspense Thriller, Romantic comedy. Crime thriller etc.
