A crystal meth user presents in their confession how they began using crystal meth for the first time. “The first time I did crystal meth was the night I met my last lover. He approached me at a dance club and asked me if I liked to “party.” Thinking he was talking about sex, I said yes. We went back to my place where he introduced me to crystal and SM. Our relationship for the next 4-1/2 years consisted of sex and drugs and not much else […] We both used crystal as a means to break down our sexual barriers, and eventually, we simply didn’t have sex unless we were high”. (SexVibe Magazine, 1996).The user notes that what they started using as a form of recreational high got out of hand and they were soon using crystal meth on an everyday means. They were not able to have normal sex, and needed meth to have that intimacy that should exist between a boyfriend and girlfriend normally. The person goes on to write about how she continued to use crystal meth even when her boyfriend left her. She was working part time jobs in a company and whatever money she had she spent it on meth. Caught by the police as a first time offender, and later with the help of her boss who was an addict in his past life himself, she was able to find a way out of it.
Katz (1988) presents the seductive theory of crime causation. According to this theory, the reasons or motivations for a crime are constructed by the offenders themselves. So it can be said that the cause of crime is constructed by the offender, which in the case study chosen is the crystal user herself. Now the argument made by Katz (1988) is that the causes of crime is constructed in such ways that it compelling and seductive to the individual. The individual is hence motivated by the fact that such a crime could be seductive to them. The case study indicates that this indeed was true in the case of the meth user. The meth offender stated that she made use of the drug with her boyfriend as both of them felt their sex was better with the drug. In fact, in their minds, as their addiction grew they invented the cause that without the drug they cannot have sex. The drug was a needed part of having sex, and thus they invented their own cause. They found the drug to be some form of an emotional connector which helped them bond better, a form of pleasure principle that helped both of them.
