John Foster Dulles was the American Secretary of State during the times of President Eisenhower. He was the republican spokesmen during the times of President Truman and Roosevelt. It was during this time that communism had started to pervade into many nations. He did not believe in the notions of communism and wanted to essentially stop the nations. He had a strong rhetoric. Dulles had the rhetoric of urging nations to fight using military arsenal against communism. He was instrumental in negotiating the terms of San Francisco treaty and occupation of Japan. When Dulles served as a Secretary of state, he was perceived by the general public as a stern moralist who had made speeches that condemned communism. He was termed as a “cold warrior” . He was considered to be a reductionist who had a strong rhetoric in framing of the ideologies. American historians state that Dulles was the architect of American foreign policy. In the modern times, based on the declassified theories, it is now known that the Secretory of State was more invested in making negotiations that was based on communication and it also shows that Dulles was not rigid as he was perceived during those times. Nevertheless, this perception has aided in the formation of a number of successful treaties and positive negotiations that had been founded to benefit America along with the world nations.
Dulles did not like the policy of Anthony Eden. Eden was a British conservative politician. He served as foreign secretary and was briefly the Prime minister of Britain between the years 1955 to 1957. He was in charge of the foreign policy of Britain during these tenures. Eden and Dulles had irrevocable differences on how to handle the spreading of communism in the region. America was generally apprehensive of the rising costs of the military. They wanted to increase the powers of the state. Eden did not want to utilize the policy of brinkmanship of showcasing bravado in controlling of the communism in the world. Eden wanted to adopt softer approach. He wanted to ensure that that the nations would agree to the terms. Eden has been touted to be more moderate politician who wanted to utilize diplomacy while the countries were reaching consensus about issues. This showcased to the world the inherent tensions between these two allies in the world war. This had led to severe issues for the nations.
