Biofuel provides a renewable source of energy and also does not harm the environment. However there are ethical issues in using biofuel as an alternative source of energy. There have been criticisms from different organizations on usage of the crops to produce biofuels. Serious questions on the food security, food prices, and human rights are being raised by governments and different organizations.
Biofuel conversion requires plants and crops. This usage of crops raises a significant question whether it is advisable to use crops which can become food for the people suffering from hunger. This is one of the most ethical issues in using crops to produce biofuel. Several people from institutions like United Nations have spoken very strongly on the increased usage of the crops in producing biofuel.
Production of liquid fuel like bioethanol requires crops like sugar cane and corn. These crops are being increasingly used to produce bioethanol. Here instead of using crops like corn for production of bioethanol it could have been used for feeding the poor. These crops are meant for the consumption by humans. There is still a large population of the world which dies of hunger. There are many poor nations where people do not have enough food. Hence it does not make sense for the world to use the crops to produce biofuels which instead could be fed to people suffering from hunger. If all the people in this world had sufficient food to eat then the decision to make biofuel out of food crops could be a sensible decision but since there is a large section of population suffering from hunger, usage of food crops to produce biofuel does not make sense (Guinée, Heijungs & van der Voet, 2009).
