Euro as common currency had many disadvantages as well as advantages for euro nation. The main advantage for the nations was the free flow of goods between the nations and easily access, business travel as there was no need to buy new currency. Thus it facilitated the trade between the nations. Also the nations like PIIGS were able to borrow the money at much lower interest rate as compared to prior introduction of Euro currency.
The main disadvantage for this was that there was no control on the money being borrowed or being lent by the nations. Here since the money was freely available the nations started borrowing the money which was cheap. Since it was mostly Germans who were lending and their export were increasing due to buying of the goods on this cheap money it was sort of bubble .It seemed that the Germans and French were paying for the expenses of these nations. This was the main disadvantage of the common currency. These nations borrowed and spent the money with no proper source of revenue for the nations. The only main source of the income had been tourism and other cyclical product dependent industries. Thus this was the main drawback of a common currency. As they spend, it was the Germans and the French who had to pay for this type of extravaganza.
Thus the common currency was created with motive to facilitate the trade and also increase the strength of the European nations. Prior to thus US dollar was the main currency and there was not currency as strong and widely used as US dollar. European nations wanted Euro to be used across the globe in the trade transactions which can help the European nations to grow and become stronger. However these nations did not use the common currency advantage properly and thus were staring at such a huge crisis.
