The aspect of the concert that I found the most interesting was that of the Trois Pieces Breves by Jacques Ibert. This piece was an eccentric mix and as such made me sit up and take notice more than the others. This was also a show ending piece and as the concert schedule described, it was indeed a fitting end.
I believe music appreciation course is indeed beneficial to me in many ways. This is like a relaxation in between my busy academic schedule. Contradicting my previous statement I would also say that it is not completely relaxation because as we are called to critique on the music and hence listen and observe better. This would fit in with my music aspirations as I have chosen to pursue a career in music. I believe that the 1F10 will be a good starting point for me to gain my academic expertise in music. In addition the observation of the concerts and the critiques that I write on it help me research in musical literature and this is also beneficial to me.
Music “expresses the inner states of one individual to another, or that of a group to another group. While it is being performed, performer and listener share in this expression of feelings” (Garfias, 2004, p.11). Music is seen in many connotations, some religious, some spiritual and some see it as a culture transfusion. Some of us even have our assignments and grades dependent on it. However it is very rare for us to see music as just music. Only when music is appreciated for what it is, listened too without any external influence or labeling can we truly appreciate it. In my studying of the Western Music, I intend to do just this, experience the music for what it is and make a career from my experience.
