In a bid to foil the attempts of popular music to provoke the common people to become aware of their rights and fight for them, those in the seats of power had contracted other musicians to copy the popular music and turn it around in a manner to gain favor with the powers that be. Then this music in many ways was declared as coming from the original pen. This was done largely to confound the general masses who were easily led by the wily ways of the authorities. Thus, there was another form of struggle to be faced by the makers of popular music in various times in history .
In several cases, music tends to become its own enemy. The catchy appeal of popular music has always caught the fancy of the young people at the earliest. Yet, the greatest threat to this form of music also comes from within. The youth invariably apes the qualities it prefers. This is a known fact in musical circles. This is one of the main reasons that musical piracy has become a total reality in musical circles and in the entire music and entertainment industry as such.
Whenever a piece of music which is released and picks up popularity quickly among the people, there are several attempts made immediately to copy it and produce similar compositions (Olsen 62-64). No doubt the objective is clear. The music pirates take full advantages of existent popular music to make some souped up versions that may have border line similarities with some of the existing popular music compositions but were not anywhere near the perfect composition, it should have been to obtain the necessary mass appeal.
There have been several attempts to stop this onslaught of illegal copying, but in recent times, it has taken on gigantic proportion. Although these cheaper versions are often created at an almost negligible or a very small fraction of the cost, they are in no league to rake in the profits of the popular music. This greatly impacts upon the original composition as well. The original composers struggle through life to come up with one popular composition and all it takes the music pirates is just one right mix and match composition and they can rake in the profits indiscriminately (Mauch, 112).
