Also, workers were forced to conduct unethical behaviour and had to work overtime. This shows the company’s little concern towards the employees’ welfare. In organizational cultures it is necessary to have an ethical climate. This climate develops share understanding of the ethically accepted behaviour and the decisions of how ethical issues should be handled. Some organizations are constantly supporting the idea of doing the right thing while others believe it is not important and any action can be accepted. This ethical climate lacked in Shanghai Husi.
It was reported that six executives of Shanghai Husi were arrested because evidence declared that they were responsible for selling ‘fake and inferior’ products. It is seen that unethical leaders lead to unethical behaviour. (Patterson, 2007) Leaders who are corrupt themselves do not restrict employees on unethical behaviours. Employees see how their leaders are succeeding and in order to succeed employees also do the same as their leaders. When leaders are involved in unlawful actions then employees will consider these actions as correct. (Wagner, 2007) This also shows that leaders were responsible for allowing the workers to focus on profit making rather than ensuring the high quality of the products and the goodwill of OSI Group. Some of the employees said ‘it does not matter’ if the meat fell to the ground, they picked it up and used it for the products.
However, many employees were against the usage of expired meat. An employee reported in court that he was forced to perform unethical activities and he advised the leaders not to use rotten meat but he was ignored. He was also forced to work overtime. This shows that the leaders were dominant and they were dictators. They did not consider advices and took decisions on their own evaluations. (New York Times, 2014)
The company lacked transformational leaders. These leaders motivate employees to achieve targets based on high quality, performance and productivity. But Shanghai Husi leaders were uninterested in the quality of the products.
