Pathophysiology is defined as the convergence of two significant disciplines, namely the pathology and physiology. Pathology is a medical discipline where the conditions seen in a person who is suffering a disease can be understood and physiology describes how processes would operate in a normal state within the human. Mrs Beecham is 74 years old and is a chronic smoker. Since 2012 which is 5 years from now, she has been smoking up to 5 cigarettes per day. In the 25 years before 2012 she has been smoking up to 20 cigarettes per day. Cigarette smoking is a major health hazard and will result in progressive phases of atherosclerosis. Some of the clinical events that happen in this end state are thrombotic. Beecham has Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT and her risks for DVT were increased because of her chronic smoking of 20 cigarettes or more for nearly 25 years. The Doppler ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis on DVT. She has history of cardiovascular and respiratory disease.

DVT is a problem where blood clots develop in the vein of a person and is called as venous thrombosis (NHS, 2016). It could lead to pain and swelling of the leg in initial situations, and in worse cases, it could also lead to the more dangerous situation called pulmonary embolism (NHS, 2016). Some of the existing treatment for DVT as in the case of Mrs Beecham would lead to prescription of anticoagulant medication for the person which would help stop the blood clotting. Other lifestyle modifications would be suggested and some patients might be asked to wear compression stockings in order to help reduce the symptoms. While these are helpful for patients with DVT and cardiovascular and respiratory disease, these are just solutions suggested for treating but not for preventing (Pope et al, 2011). In order to prevent, it is necessary to help the patient stop smoking. Mrs Beecham needs help in stopping smoking and will also need to exercise in order to improve circulation (Pope et al, 2011).
