The Harbin Brewery of Northeast China, south of the Siberian border, took shape in 1900 when Ulubulevski, a Russian National, founded a brewery in his name.  The mission of this brewery was to supply beer to the Russians working on the Trans-Manchurian Railway project that was started in 1898. In 1932, the name of the brewery changed to the “Harbin Brewing Factory” when it came under the shared control of Chinese and Czech nationals. In 1946, when the Soviet Army captured Manchuria, the brewery came under the control of Soviet Nationals and was renamed the ‘Quillin Stock Company Limited’. In 1950 after Stalin ordered all Chinese assets be returned, the ownership of the brewery fell back into the hands of the Chinese Government, and was renamed the ‘Harbin Brewery’.

In June 2003, SABMiller acquired 29.6% equity in Harbin Brewery. After a long fought battle these shares were taken over by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2004. Harbin has increased its annual beer production capacity to over 1 million tons, and has become a giant in China’s beer industry after its successful reform and listing in the Hong Kong stock market in 2010. Anheuser–Busch InBev currently owns the brewery, and this has facilitated export of Harbin beer to European and North American markets. However in comparison to Harbin Beer or Zhujiang Beer, its share in these markets is minor. In the North American market, Harbin beer was first sold in ethnic Chinese supermarkets (which remain its primary focus of sales today), and gradually began to expand to other Asian supermarkets, such as ethnic Korean supermarkets like Market World and Freshia.

Currently in 2013,Harbin Brewery’s existing annual output is about 1.26 million tons of beer, with the bulk, nearly 1.2 million tons, being produced in northern China.
