The variable of ADHD related aggression is not found in any studies or interview on Gacy. His congenital heart condition was in fact the only condition that was seen to have an impact on him when he was child. The fourth variable of antisocial personality, however, was a t-fit in the case of Gacy as evident from the research works. John Wayne Gacy had a very manipulative streak to him. He was able to coerce people and charm them even though it was not his inherent personality to be so. His crimes and the lack of remorse that he showed towards the crimes attest his Antisocial Personality Disorders (ASPD). He had a superficial charm to him and was able to use this at all times. Gacy exhibited extreme emotional nature, emotional instability which is considered as a characteristic trait of APSD. He was able to handle emotions in relation to the murder from a very standoff angle. American Psychiatric Association (2013) notes that manipulation and a disregard of human sentiments like empathy or remorse is indicative of APSD. Furthermore, it is contended that these symptoms often manifest themselves in early childhood (Ohsako, 1997; Orpinas et al., 2003). Theories of offenders such as John Wayne Gacy showed that early childhood aggression and abuse situations were a strong influential factor in the creation of their criminal inclination. Two types of aggression have been presented by Oswego (2016) in their research work which is Frustration aggression and Psychosexual Aggression.
The frustration aggression theory describes the cause for aggression (Manuzza et al., 1989). When an individual wants something, and when that inclination is barred by society or family, then the individual will become hostile. This is the frustration-aggression hypothesis. Now according to this hypothesis, John Gacy’s early childhood actions could be understood. He was attracted towards other boys and had an inclination to conform to feminine tasks at home. However, this sexual identity was not accepted by his father, who abused him and treated him as a queer. The violent disapproval followed by repressions of emotions resulted in frustration in his childhood and deep repressed aggression (Osler & Starkey, 1996). The repressed aggression was what led to his criminal actions in later life. Frustration-aggression hypothesis argument is that Gacy was not able to act out on the frustrations he felt. Acting out frustrations could have given him some relief. However, he was denied this relief because of the abusive controlling parent. Gacy was not able to vent the bottled-up aggression until that point when his wife and kids left him. This was the time his aggression took a more non-prohibited influence on his life, influencing him into criminal tendencies. The lack of self-control evident in people with antisocial personality disorder further motivated him to show his aggression in ways that harmed other people. “To exemplify, Gacy’s ties were stronger in the moment to his family than to his desire to murder. Once Gacy’s salient bond to his family dispersed, the motivation for self-control abated and he succumbed to his innate aggression” (Oswego, 2016, p.6).
Psychosexual aggression is another perspective that is applied to understand how Gacy’s murders tied up with repressed sexual identity from his childhood. However, this aspect is beyond the scope of this research work and is not discussed at this point. It is enough to understand, as researchers, like Oswego (2016), point out that these violent sexual fantasies and aggression had their roots in his childhood.
