Alderfer theory tries to explain the gaps of Taylor’s scientific management theories. This theory was one of the earlier theories that tried to move past the scientific management theory. It examined the root causes of needs and motivation for the employees to performance. It explained about the existing of needs in the society and how the people change as they develop. It also probes into the ways in motivation which is based on the subjective requirements (Latham, and Pinder, 2005). It is similar to Maslow Hierarchy of needs. There have been other motivational theories that suggest that people work for factors other than money. This is defined as the different levels of needs by Maslow. In the initial level, the people require the basic physiological needs such as food, shelter to name a few.

Once a person gains these basic requirements, the next motivational factor for the person is the safety and security needs.In this level, the people try to protect themselves from external elements and seek stability and freedom. Once they have the basic security, the person starts to forge relationships of love and belongingness to the people. They have the esteem needs or the need to gain respect in their communities once they have the relationships. There are many levels in which the individuals seek to gain respect or admiration among their circles Latham, and Pinder, 2005). Once this is reached, the people start to look for self-fulfilment. Maslow discusses about the spiritual needs of the person once they achieve all these levels.
