Organizations need to create a cohesive work environment that ensures the safety of the people is assured. A widespread awareness is needed here so as to ensure workers are treated properly (Abraham, 2000). This will result in better organizational effectiveness. In the current times, majority of the research are focused on the ways in which the employees are mistreated in the companies. However, this is the extreme case, these results in cases where the employees can treat each other with nuanced aggression (Mostafa, 2016; Kratochwil et al., 1986). A hostile work environment is created for the people. For example, certain behaviour and actions that implies a total disregard for each other is created. This includes giving each other shorter abrupt responses and displaying effects of passive aggressive behaviour (Cavanaugh et al., 2000; Abraham, 2000). A low-intensity deviant behaviour that causes the people to not indulge in workplace inclusivity and act out in explicit acts of aggression is created. These kinds of behaviour are found in the entire workplace environment. The research indicates that the workplace stress is caused by these kinds of deviant behaviour rather than physical assault. It is subtle and contributes to the stress of the people in the company (Cavanaugh et al., 2000).
“Conservation of resources theory” states that the individuals who are in working in a place where the demands are higher would tend to dissipate the valuable resources for coping in the company. They rely on several sources to protect themselves. In this process, there could be negative consequences for the employees. The individuals face multiple demands around the same time and there could be additional resource depletion that causes the trigger for situations. The excessive stressful conditions would cause the people to experience negative consequences (Abraham, 2000; Connor, 2005). JD-R model states that the employees face mile negative issues when they are made to work in conditions where there could be higher demands with lesser resources. This causes several stresses for the people. On the other hand, the effort-recovery model states that individuals need to recover from their stress full conditions. This kind of recovery is found to be in focused when the individual attempt to continually move away from the negative reactions (Fox et al., 2001). It is a known fact that certain demands can deplete the individual resources for coping with certain issues (McLaughlin et al., 2015). However, certain issues force the people to handle certain issues that are not part of the work. This results in uncivil acts that are found to result in detrimental effects.
Hence, a simple equation can be stated as the root cause of stress. The stress factor is having high demands and low resources. This causes the people to develop stress. The ways in which the people deal with stress and the ways in which the organizations promote a cohesive work environment are presented in the following. Understanding the categories of stress will point towards ways to handle them.
