Consumers had begun to drift away from the idea of bulk grocery shopping from large chains and alternatively chose to purchase in smaller quantities making multiple visited to the local grocers and the convenience stores. The major cause for this change in buying behaviour can be attributed to inflation and price rise.

Purchases in smaller quantities helped in curbing wastage of food and saving of money in the event of salary stagnation and falling disposable income of the consumers (Seiders, Simonides and Tigert, 2000).
