In the movie adaptation of the movie, the Coen brothers manage to exhibit two different gender roles, where one is a submissive traditional woman in accordance with classical western while the other woman is independent similar to those of the modern western genre. Despite the efforts of the male characters to confront the changing social roles and norms, they fail to hold on to their position as the ultimate possessors of power, thus further emphasizing the role of women in the novel.
